Upgrades to your computer

Hard Drive

In today’s world of high technology, gaming, video/audio, you can utilize your hard drive space very quickly, causing your PC to become sluggish and in some cases non-responsive.

Here are some interesting fact about hard drive space not commonly known to the average computer user!

1.    When you visit and Internet page, that page is downloaded to your PC along with graphics and other transparent objects. They are then stored in your PC as what are called “Cookies, “Temporary Internet Files”, and “Cached items” over time these files take up more and more space on your hard drive

2.    To give you another example, under a technology called ATA your data was stored in tracks, and a series of tracks were called a sector, and the heads read the data from these sectors.

This scheme had a limited amount of space as to store your data, and caused valuable disk space loss!

If you start to type a document, and need more information before you complete it, and save it to disk in a predetermined size sector, most times not filling the sector (504 MB)

Then you start your next document, that document is not stored right behind the other it is stored in a new sector, Blue and that space not used by your first document remains unusable, if you close the document and open it a day later, to edit, even the new data is stored in another sector.

Not to place scare, there is a simple program called De-fragmentation, this moves the data originally scatter across the disk as described above to contiguous sectors (placed together!),  but this does not add disk space and overtime this along with heat and high spinning platters can cause disk space loss and deterioration.

Also, along with the system (operating system, CPU and other commands) the hard drive is used as a type of memory, and this process is called swapping or swap file or disk cache.

When you are typing a document or visiting the internet, you are not working off your hard drive but, directly out of Memory, when memory is fill or at its limit, it places the programs and files you are not immediately using on to a reserve space on the hard drive, this can be set, but needs to be set correctly.

Many other occurrences, transparent to you as the user cause disk space usage, like log files, updates and drivers for new devices or even fixes from Microsoft.

As mentioned earlier, de-fragmentation is a tool you can use to put your files in contiguous order, but it does not gain you disk space.

Memory

Memory does help you computer run faster in some cases, however to put it in proper terminology, it actually gives you more space to work in (eliminating the constant need for the earlier mentioned swap files) and quicker and better access for the other programs and devices.

Another big memory user is when you as the hard working person you are, have a spreadsheet open, the Internet, a word, document and a printer in action. Except for the printer, which has its own memory, the work you are doing can fill up memory fast!

Lennon Enterprises Computer Consultant Group can help, we will assess your PC, working with your PC’s manufacturer and their website, we’ll make a determination as to what your system can do, and what type and how much memory can be added and other task related to upgrading may be required.

We also offer a monthly maintenance program, to fine to your PC to optimal working levels.

We will explore a newer technology in Hard Drive types, which have higher capacity and faster speeds, and is now being introduced to the consumer, this technology is called Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA), which can write and read data at a 1.5+ GBps

Note: You can even add a second hard drive to your computer, adding a level of security for you data, or maybe a DVD burner/player.
